Months-long parking lot, road closures anticipated for storm drain project

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The last stretch of a years-long storm drain project throughout downtown Bloomington has forced the closure of several parking areas near Indiana Avenue.

The project will increase the size of an underground culvert where the campus river meets underneath Indiana Avenue. The goal is to prevent significant flooding like what was seeing during the Kirkwood Avenue flood of 2021.

Part of the parking lot behind the Von Lee Building will be closed to parking, eliminating about half of the EM-S and EM-P parking spaces. The lot is expected to be fully open by Aug. 1.

The project will force Indiana Avenue to close between Kirkwood and Sixth Street starting in May.

Kirkwood Avenue, which in the past has been shut off from vehicle traffic in the summer months would be the detour route for drivers heading north on Indiana Avenue. If the on-street dining program returns for this summer, 4th Street would likely be the diverted traffic route.
