Indiana State Police investigating death of Jay County inmate

PORTLAND, Ind. (IUSTV News) - Detectives from the the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post are investigating the death of an inmate being held at the Jay County jail.

ISP says the Jay County Sheiff requested state police to complete the death investigation.

Officials identified the inmate as 33-year-old Kevin Whitted, of Muncie. ISP says an investigation found that Whitted was alone in a padded cell was was being monitored with video surveillance.

Around 7:20 a.m., ISP says a corrections officer observed Whitted fall forward in his cell. A jail nurse went into the cell and provided medical aid until EMS arrived.

Whitted was trasnported to a local hospital in Portland, where he later died.

An autopsy in Jay County is scheduled for Tuesday. ISP says they believe Whitted may have experienced a medical condition related to withdrawal symptoms associated with a drug addiction.

The death investigation remains active.
