ISP says the Jay County Sheiff requested state police to complete the death investigation.
Officials identified the inmate as 33-year-old Kevin Whitted, of Muncie. ISP says an investigation found that Whitted was alone in a padded cell was was being monitored with video surveillance.
Around 7:20 a.m., ISP says a corrections officer observed Whitted fall forward in his cell. A jail nurse went into the cell and provided medical aid until EMS arrived.
Whitted was trasnported to a local hospital in Portland, where he later died.
An autopsy in Jay County is scheduled for Tuesday. ISP says they believe Whitted may have experienced a medical condition related to withdrawal symptoms associated with a drug addiction.
The death investigation remains active.
