Indiana Swim and Dive Tops Northwestern, Falls to Texas in Season Opener

Josh Bey

Indiana Swim and Dive was back in the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center for their first traditional meet of the season on Friday as they took on Northwestern and Texas.

Going into the meet, Indiana was ranked No. 5 for the women's team and No. 2 for the men's. Looking at the competition, Northwestern was unranked, while Texas was No. 1 for the men and No. 3 for the women.

The competition featured a short course meters format rather than the traditional collegiate short course yards in order to provide the athletes with an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming international championship trials.

The Hoosiers took the win against Northwestern with a final score of 241-59 for women and 224-76 for the men. However, the team fell short to Texas 177.5-122.5 on the men's side and 188-112 on the women's side.

For the women, Alex Shackell continued to prove she is the one to look out for this season. Last year during her freshman season, she was an All-American in seven events and set the Big Ten record for the 100-fly. She opened this season by winning both butterfly races and the individual skins competition at the College Swimming League meet. In today's meet, she won the 200-meter fly with a time of 2:03.96 as well as the 100-meter fly with a time of 56.57.

Liberty Clark is another big name to watch out for. She won the 200-meter freestyle with a flat time of 1:53.

On the men's side, sophomore Josh Bey is a standout for the Hoosiers. The defending Big Ten Champion headlined the roster in today's meet, finishing the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:04.28 and the 200-IM with 1:55.11.

The Hoosiers will return to competition on October 16 in Walnut, California, in a College Swimming League meet against University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and North Carolina State.
