Indiana was welcomed home to the bright lights of Bill Armstrong Stadium as they hosted the 5th-ranked Michigan State Spartans after a two-game road trip in California. The 4-8-2 Hoosiers looked back on a comeback draw against USC, which snapped their 6-game losing skid. It was never going to be an easy task on a chilly Friday night, as the 10-2-2 Spartans have been excellent throughout the fall.
After each team took turns dominating possession, Michigan State presented the first few key opportunities of the match. The two most notable were Bella Najira ringing a shot off the post from long distance in the 16th minute and Kayla Briggs doing the same just a few minutes later when Dani Jacobson was able to get just enough of a touch on the ball to push it onto the woodwork.
As the rain fell heavier, the relentless Spartans finally broke through in the 33rd minute. Emerson Seargent found the back of the net as her shot hit the crossbar once again but landed across the touchline. The Hoosiers were able to keep the deficit at one through constant pressure in the closing minutes of the first half.
After a birthday celebration for Hoosier, the Bison and the rain momentarily cleared away from Bill Armstrong Stadium, and the second half was under way. Some heartbreak for Indiana started the second half as a Jenna Chatterton goal was brought back after a VAR review for a foul call in the 61st minute. The call proved to be a huge blow to the Indiana momentum as all the air was sucked out of the crowd with the rain reaching its hardest.
The Spartans looked to pounce on their momentum as they found the post for an astonishing fourth time of the evening. Although the Hoosiers had a goal taken off the board, they were lucky to be holding Michigan State to a one-goal lead through the heart of the second half.
Michigan State eventually found their second in the 83rd minute as Renee Watson slotted a shot to the far post into the bottom corner, giving Jacobson no chance to make a save. Watson’s second goal of the season was the nail in the coffin for the Spartans. 2-0 was the final on a cold and wet Friday night as the Spartans proved why they are a top 5 program in the nation. The Hoosiers await Purdue at home on Thursday as the 2026 season begins to wind to a close.
