Metered parking in Bloomington free until at least Sunday

Bloomington winter free parking

BLOOMINGTON — All metered parking spaces are free until at least Jan. 19, the City of Bloomington announced this week.

Office of the Mayor Communications Director Desiree DeMolina said the rates were waived as the city continues to clear roads from last week’s winter storms.

DeMolina said many spaces are unavailable for parking because they are still snow-covered, and warned that some spots might not get cleared with continued parking.

"[We] encourage parking turnover and avoid vehicles hibernating in one spot as some cars tend to settle in for the long haul under these circumstances. This way, our teams can get in, finish the job, and keep everything moving," DeMolina said.

Metered parking will remain free through Sunday, but may be extended if the city determines too much snow still needs to be cleared.

15 inches of snow was dumped on Bloomington between snow storms on Jan. 5-6 and Jan. 10, according to the National Weather Service.
