New Indiana bill could impact IU Board of Trustees

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana State Senate recently passed a bill that would change the way tenure is structured and potentially threaten academic freedom.

If signed into law, the board of trustees at a university would decide who gets tenure, and they could review a professor's tenure every five years.

Part of that review would be on "intellectual diversity," which the trustees get to decide on the meaning of.

The bill would also allow the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House to appoint two members to the board of trustees.

The bill is now on its way to the Indiana House of Representatives.
